Here is a statement from Jessica Biel about her struggles:
"We encountered closed doors and difficulties in getting our stories told, even after being in the industry for so long. Our journey involved creating a short film and a feature-length movie, both of which were a labor of love."
Eventually things changed with the book-based crime thriller series "The Sinner." The series is based on a novel by Petra Hammesfahr. Biel and her Michelle Purple tried to pitch and sell the idea in the industry.

Here is a statement from Jessica Biel about trying to sell the book-based idea "The Sinner":
“When we were actually selling that show, Michelle and I looked at each other and she said, ‘If we don't sell this show, I'm quitting,’ and I said, ‘Me too, I'm quitting.....If this show doesn't sell, I don't know what people want, I don't know what to bring them. I don't understand this business anymore. I just don't get it anymore.”
Luckily, the book-based TV Series was picked up by USA network. Biel was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to showcase her talent in a series that was picked up by the USA network. She appeared in the show for four seasons, starring alongside Bill Pullman. Biel's outstanding performance in the first season earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
Looking back, Biel recalled on the work she put in to see The Sinner through, calling it “a very humbling experience.”
Here is her statement about the experience with The Sinner:
“And it still continues to be humbling. I don't find that my industry or being an actor or producer is easy in any shape, way, shape or form. It is so much blood, sweat and tears that you put into getting these projects made, and so many of the things we work on never ever come to fruition.”
It’s easy to understand why someone might quit under those circumstances. Instead, Biel and Iron Ocean wove their success from Book-based series The Sinner into book-based series Candy, a 2022 crime miniseries on Hulu, and the Freeform anthology series Cruel Summer.
