The Frankenstein lore project was in development at Warner Bros. Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed their support in the project. Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren will produce the film, while Courtney Kivowitz and Carla Raij serve as executive producers.

The film is Gyllenhaal's unique interpretation of Frankenstein's pursuit of love. Gyllenhaal's film joins a growing list of Frankenstein-related projects, including Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things," Zelda Williams' "Lisa Frankenstein", and Guillermo del Toro's Netflix adaptation featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and Felix Kammerer.
Gyllenhaal made her directorial debut with the book-based film "The Lost Daughter". The novel was written by Elena Ferrante.
