Here is David Nicholls' statement about the project:
"From the outset, I knew I did not wish to undertake the task of adaptation myself. After spending copious amounts of time toiling over it, I felt it needed a fresh perspective. The collaboration has been nothing short of remarkable. Naturally, there have been necessary cuts and condensations throughout the process, requiring strategic editorial decisions. Yet, I am elated with the progress thus far, and the overall experience has been profoundly enjoyable."
Nicholls explains that the concept for the series started five to six years ago. The emergence of streaming TV felt like a groundbreaking new medium, comparable to the experience of reading a novel rather than watching a movie. However, the question remained as to who would portray the characters of Emma and Dexter and if they would possess the necessary chemistry. The answer to that question was Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall. Nicholls recalls the deep search process where he witnessed numerous actors auditioning for the roles, but it was Mod's exceptional performance in "This Is Going to Hurt" that caught his attention. He believed she exemplified the qualities of Emma, with a certain attentiveness and wisdom. On the other hand, Woodall was someone Nicholls had never seen before, but their chemistry during the auditions was nothing short of magical.
Throughout the series, Woodall and Mod will guide the audience through the lives of Dexter and Emma, both together and apart, spanning over several years. The intention behind the show was to create a format similar to looking through a photograph album, where each episode represents a snapshot into a specific period of their lives, capturing a fleeting moment in time. Therefore, the characters will age alongside the passage of time. However, as with any adaptation, there will be alterations to the original story. Notably, Nicholls mentions that there will be an increase in explicit content compared to the novel.
"One Day" will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, Feb. 8th.
