Thanks to an art historian, a long-lost piece of unconventional art has returned to Hungary after being missing for nearly a century. In 2009, Gergely Barki, a researcher at Hungary's national gallery in Budapest, saw the painting titled "Sleeping Lady with Black Vase" by Robert Bereny while watching the book-based film "Stuart Little" with his daughter Lola. Barki was astonished to see the painting in the background of a scene ( image is at the very top of this blog post). Even though Barki has only seen a faded black-and-white photo of the painting from an exhibition in 1928, he immediately recognized it. Barki soon contacted the production companies behind the film (Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures) and asked about the painting's whereabouts.

It would take two years before Barki got a response from a former set designer involved in Stuart Little. She said that she purchased the painting from an antique shop in Pasadena, California.
The painting was exchanged a few times before making its way to Budapest. It was then put for auction with a starting price of $110,830.17.
Barki emphasized the importance of preserving Hungarian masterpieces that have been lost or scattered across the globe due to the turbulent events of the 20th century. He believes that the return of Berény's painting is a testament to the enduring value of art and history.
Little Known Fact about the painter Robert Bereny:- Berény, a well-known figure in the avant-garde movement known as the Group of Eights, had to leave Hungary in the 1920s after his involvement in the political events of the time. He established himself in Berlin, where he had a relationship with actress Marlene Dietrich. Rumors had connected him to Anastasia, the daughter of Russia's last tsar.
