Book-based animated film "Dog Man" dominates the box office this weekend, with an estimated $35.3M opening. This is the third consecutive No. 1 debut for DreamWorks, following Kung Fu Panda 4 and book-based animated film "The Wild Robot". This is the 26th DWA film to open at No. 1 in the U.S., for a studio originally founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen.
According to PostTrak, 45% of ticket buyers chose Dog Man because it looked fun and entertaining, while nearly a third attended because they’re fans of author Dav Pilkey graphic novels. The film earned a solid A CinemaScore, though adult audiences gave it a bit more mixed feedback, with PostTrak exits averaging 3 ½ stars and 75% positive.
The film skewed heavily toward younger viewers, with 77% of ticket buyers under 35, and 51% of the audience identifying as female. The film also attracted diverse audiences, with 38% Caucasian, 26% Latino/Hispanic, 14% Black, and 11% Asian. The movie is performing well across the country, with the Cinemark Rialto in California leading the charge as the No. 1 theater, grossing just over $22k.
