Published in 2019, author Adrian McKinty wrote the novel while supporting his family as an Uber driver in Australia, and the book went on to become a bestseller in 20 countries, sparking a competitive bidding war for adaptation rights.
The project was first announced in 2020, with Edgar Wright attached to direct a feature adaptation for Universal from a script by Jane Goldman and Wright. It later moved to Sony, but development eventually stalled. Now, the rights appear to have landed at HBO, where Michael Ellenberg reportedly moved quickly to acquire them once they became available. Sneider characterizes the development as a “hot rumor,” and HBO has declined to comment.
Ellenberg is expected to executive produce through Media Res alongside Lindsey Springer. The author himself Adrian McKinty will also serve as an executive producer, as will his representative, Shane Salerno, who recently worked on the Avatar sequels. Lindelof is currently an executive producer on Lanterns, which is set to debut on HBO next year.
Here is the book synopsis of "The Chain" by Adrian McKinty:
Every morning follows the same routine: Rachel Klein drops her daughter off at the bus stop and starts her day. Then a call from an unknown number shatters everything. A woman on the line calmly tells Rachel that her daughter, Kylie, is bound and gagged in the back of her car. There is only one way to get her back: Rachel must obey every instruction—pay a ransom and abduct another child.
This is no ordinary kidnapping. The caller is a mother too, whose own son has been taken, and if Rachel refuses to comply, the boy will be killed. “You are not the first,” she warns. “And you will not be the last.”
Rachel has been pulled into The Chain, a relentless and chilling system that forces victims to become perpetrators while enriching its unseen architects. The rules are clear, but the moral cost is unbearable: raise the money, choose a target, and commit an unthinkable crime within hours.
What the creators of The Chain understand all too well is that parents will do anything to save their children—and that kidnapping is only the beginning.
