That opening weekend was already 11% higher than “Jurassic World Dominion,” 41% above “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and more than double “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” It is also higher than the $50 million first weekend posted by “The Meg” in China back in August 2018.

Even though Barbie is still number one and has across the billion dollar mark, the newcomer "Meg 2: The Trench" manage to perform quite well by seizing the 2nd spot at the box office. The book-based film was able to outperform the latest entry to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise "Mutant Mayhem. The film also took over the previous spot that was once owned by the book-based film "Oppenheimer."
“Meg 2: The Trench” opened in second place with $30 million from 3,503 North American theaters. It’s a decent start, albeit a significant drop from the original 2018 film, which opened to $45 million and became a surprise smash with $530.5 million globally.

The historical film has grossed $552 million at the global box office, becoming the director’s sixth film to cross the $500 million mark. “Oppenheimer,” which has remained a force in Imax, landed in third place on domestic box office charts behind the sequel to “The Meg” and ahead of “Mutant Mayhem.”
All in all, two book-based films are in the top 3 spots at the box office.
