Here is a statement from Kelly about her experience with her mom from People Magazine:
“I spent a lot of my youth wishing my mom was something she wasn’t, wishing she was like the other moms. I only was able to really appreciate how special she was when I got much older. In fact when it was maybe a little too late.”

In her memoir, Kelly revealed that at age 17, in desperation, she performed in peep shows at an Albuquerque adult-video store. She did so to support herself when her mother would skip town for weeks or months at a time. Eventually Kelly moved in with her abusive high school boyfriend. She became pregnant, but opted for an abortion and returned to L.A., hoping to connect with her dad Rick Dufay, a former Aerosmith guitarist.
Kelly eventually went to school to become a scrub nurse while modeling. However, she got a role in the 2006's NBC drama "Friday Night Lights." She then dated her co-star Taylor Kitsch which was a rocky relationship that strained relationships with her cast members. During this time, Kelly discovered her mother had colon cancer. Kelly brought her mother to Texas( where the drama series was filmed) and with the help of her therapist talked to her mother about her childhood.
Here is a statement from Kelly about confronting her mother over her childhood:
“I saw her start to crumble in shame and regret and pain when she was already in so much of all of those things, and I just immediately thought, ‘I don’t need to do this to her. I only need to forgive her and love her. She’s already broken. What is the point of pouring salt on the wound? I’m fine. I just want to take care of her right now.”
Kelly cared for Mo until she died at 51. Kelly said she was there, holding her mom as she went.
Kelly's Memoir "Tell Me Everything" will be in stores on Tuesday, May 2nd.
