First off, congrats to Coco Gauff for winning her first Grand Slam tournament at the U.S. Open today.
Here is Coco's winning speech from center court:
“Honestly, thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. A month ago, I won a 500 title and people said I would stop at that. I’m here with this trophy right now. I tried my best to carry this with grace and I’ve been doing my best. So honestly, to those who thought [they] were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it. And now I’m really burning so bright right now.”
Coco Gauff was not the only winner today. Director Yorgos Lanthimos won the golden lion for the book-based film "Poor Things" at the 80th Venice Film Festival. The film stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Ruffalo. The film is based on a novel by Alasdair Gray. Yorgos dedicated the award to Emma Stone. He said the film wouldn't exist without her. He also said "This film is her in front and behind the camera.”
Another winner besides Tennis Superstar Coco and Director Yorgos Lathimos is breakout actress Cailee Spaeny. Cailee took the Best Actress prize for her performance in Sofia Coppola’s book-based film "Priscilla." The film is based on a memoir
