Barber suffers from ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that prevents him from sitting in regular chairs. He had brought a special chair with him to the AMC Cineplex in Greenville, North Carolina, where he planned to attend a screening of book-based musical film "The Color Purple." However, theater staff refused to allow him to use his chair in the disabled section. Barber, who relies on two canes to walk and always uses his chair, expressed his disappointment at not being accommodated for his disability. Local police were called, but no charges were filed.
AMC apologized to Barber and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to him and his guests. Adam Aron, AMC's CEO, personally called Barber to apologize and arranged a meeting to discuss the incident. AMC assured customers with disabilities that they are welcome and encouraged those in need of special seating to communicate with a manager in advance. The company is also reviewing its policies to prevent similar situations in the future.
