Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss of Scott Free will produce the film alongside David Kajganich and Edward Berger through their banner Nine Hours, with Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner also producing for Plan B Entertainment.
The production company, Scott Free, has been developing the script for some time, ever since David Kajganich brought the 1994 novel to the company nearly a decade ago—at one point even considering it as a potential directing vehicle. Interest in the project was recently reignited by Edward Berger, who previously collaborated with Scott Free TV on AMC’s The Terror, created by Kajganich and executive produced by Ridley Scott. Once the script made its way to Brad Pitt and he signed on, the project quickly became one of the most sought-after packages in the market this year.
Here is the goodreads synopsis of "The Riders" by Tim Winton:
Fred Scully waits at the arrival gate of an international airport, anxious to see his wife and seven-year-old daughter. After two years in Europe they are finally settling down. He sees a new life before them, a stable outlook, and a cottage in the Irish countryside that he's renovated by hand. He's waited, sweated on this reunion. He does not like to be alone - he's that kind of man. The flight lands, the glass doors hiss open, and Scully's life begins to go down in flames.
