After years in development, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2016, and was released in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016, during the celebration of Roald Dahl's 100th birthday. Although it received generally positive reviews, it underperformed at the box office. It was also the final screenplay written by Melissa Mathison and was dedicated to her memory.
Genesis:
Development on a live-action adaptation of The BFG began in the early 1990s with producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Over the years, several writers worked on the screenplay, but the project remained unfinished. In 2011, DreamWorks acquired the film rights, and Melissa Mathison was hired to write a new script. Steven Spielberg joined as director in 2014, and the film was co-produced by DreamWorks, Amblin Entertainment, Walden Media, and Walt Disney Studios. Released in 2016, The BFG became Spielberg's first Disney-branded film and the second film adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel.
Box Office:
The BFG earned $195.2 million worldwide against a $140 million production budget. It opened in North America with $18.6 million, far below expectations, and was considered a box office disappointment despite generally positive reviews. The film performed better in several international markets, including the United Kingdom and China, but its global earnings were not enough to make it a financial success.
