The follow-up is based on the second installment in McFadden’s bestselling thriller trilogy.
The sequel has been in development for several months. Sweeney is expected to return in a starring role and as an executive producer, with Michele Morrone also in talks to reprise his part. Paul Feig is anticipated to come back to direct, working from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who wrote the first film. Producing duties will be handled by Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Feig and Laura Fischer under Pretty Dangerous Pictures, along with Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young. McFadden will again serve as an executive producer.
Here is a statement from Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, about the upcoming film project:
“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next. We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney. The Housemaid’s Secret is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”
Here is a statement from Liberman, Hidden Pictures producer, about the upcoming film project:

Here is the book synopsis of "The Housemaid's Secret" by Freida McFadden:
As he shows me around their breathtaking penthouse, a sense of dread settles in about the woman hidden behind closed doors. But I can’t afford to lose this job—not if I want my darkest secret to stay buried…
Employers who don’t probe into my past are hard to come by, so I count myself lucky when the Garricks hire me to clean their glamorous, city-view penthouse and cook elaborate meals in their gleaming kitchen. It’s the perfect place to lie low, keep my head down, and wait for what I want. Almost perfect. I’ve yet to meet Mrs. Garrick. I’m not allowed inside the guest bedroom. I hear her sobbing at night. I find flecks of blood on the collar of her white nightgowns while doing the laundry. And one day, I can’t stop myself from knocking on her door. When it slowly opens, what I discover inside changes everything.
That’s when I make a vow. I’ve done this before. I can keep Mrs. Garrick safe—while making sure my own secrets stay locked away. Douglas Garrick has crossed the line. And he will pay. The only question is how far I’m willing to go.
