Because of Winn-Dixie is a comedy-drama film adapted from Kate DiCamillo’s 2000 novel of the same name( FYI: the book is celebrating its 25th anniversary in March of this year). Joan Singleton wrote the screenplay while Wayne Wang directed the feature. Trevor Albert produced the feature film. Walden Media produced the film while 20th Century Fox distributed it.
Cast members of Because of Winn-Dixie includes Jeff Daniels, Cicely Tyson, Dave Matthews (in his acting debut), Eva Marie Saint, and AnnaSophia Robb (in her feature film debut). It premiered at the USA Film Festival on January 26, 2005, and was released in theaters on February 18, 2005. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $33.5 million, surpassing its production budget of $14 million.
Did you know?: Director Wayne Wang chose to use Picardy Shepherds for the film because he believed their appearance closely resembled the depiction of Winn-Dixie on the book cover, making them familiar to readers. Since none were available in the U.S., dogs were brought in from France. Although the film is set in Naomi, Florida, as in the book, it was really filmed in Louisiana. As a result, the police car and uniform emblems in the film feature Florida insignia instead of Louisiana. Additionally, the bunny Otis gives to Opal around the 56-minute mark is a Netherland Dwarf, a breed that typically grows to only 6 to 8 inches (150 to 200 mm) in length.
