Jaws debuted in 409 theaters with a record-breaking $7 million opening weekend and earned $21.1 million in its first 10 days, quickly recouping its production costs. Within 59 days and across 954 playdates, it surpassed the $100 million mark. In just 78 days, it overtook The Godfather as the highest-grossing film at the North American box office, exceeding that film’s $86 million total and becoming the first movie to generate $100 million in U.S. theatrical rentals. Jaws remained the number-one film in the U.S. for 14 consecutive weeks, and its initial run brought in $123.1 million in rentals. Subsequent re-releases in 1976 and 1979 pushed its total domestic rentals to $133.4 million.
The film’s international release began in December 1975 and achieved similar success overseas, breaking box office records in countries like Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, Spain, and Mexico. By January 11, 1976, Jaws had become the highest-grossing film worldwide with $132 million in rentals, edging out The Godfather’s $131 million. By 1983, around the release of the third installment in the franchise, Variety reported global rentals had reached $270 million. Jaws held the title of the highest-grossing film of all time until Star Wars premiered in 1977, surpassing it domestically six months after release and globally by 1978.
