Apple TV+ has acquired the rights to Colson Whitehead's Harlem trilogy. The streamer is in the early stages of developing an ongoing series based on Whitehead's bestselling crime novels: Harlem Shuffle (2021), Crook Manifesto (2023), and Cool Machine, which was published on July 21.
Graham Yost ( book-based series Silo) and Aric Avelino are adapting the novels for television and will executive produce alongside Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel, Melissa Bernstein of Special Interests, and Whitehead.
Here is the book synopsis of "Harlem Shuffle" (book one) by Colson Whitehead:
Set in early 1960s Harlem, Harlem Shuffle follows Ray Carney, a hardworking furniture salesman and devoted family man with a hidden connection to the city's criminal underworld. When his cousin draws him into a risky hotel heist, Ray is forced to balance his respectable life with an increasingly dangerous world of corrupt cops, gangsters, and con artists.
As his double life spirals out of control, Ray must decide just how far he's willing to go to protect his family—and himself. Blending crime, family drama, humor, and social commentary, Harlem Shuffle is both a gripping caper and a vivid portrait of Harlem at a pivotal moment in its history.
