As of now, the studio is eager to explore the potential of bringing Westeros to movie theaters. This development could signal a shift in the company’s strategy regarding the franchise. The original series' showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, envisioned concluding the story with three feature films instead of the 2019 final season. Martin himself was supportive of the film concept, expressing to The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 that various ideas were being discussed. However, for a considerable time, HBO firmly opposed this notion, preferring to maintain the series as a prestigious HBO exclusive.
In 2022, HBO premiered the acclaimed prequel series House of the Dragon, which recently completed its second season. The network is also gearing up for the release of another prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, slated for 2025. Additionally, there are various other concepts in the works. One intriguing area that has yet to be explored involves narratives set after the original series, as all the adaptations filmed so far have focused on earlier events.
