Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s political satire Digger, starring Tom Cruise, struggled out of the gate with a $20M global debut, including $12M overseas and $8M domestically.
That’s a far cry from Paul Thomas Anderson’s book-based film One Battle After Another, which opened to $48.5M worldwide across 74 territories a year ago. The film became Anderson’s highest-grossing movie ever, finishing with $213.2M worldwide.
Among the best starts for a Colleen Hoover adaptation were Portugal, where Verity grossed $575K from 60 screens for No. 1, and Hungary, where it opened to $318K from 70 screens, also taking the top spot.
The film scored a string of No. 1 openings across Europe and Latin America, including Germany ($3.8M from 715 screens), the Netherlands ($590K from 115), Austria ($380K from 68), Sweden ($375K from 120), Switzerland ($330K from 70), Belgium ($320K from 65), Argentina ($300K from 190), Greece ($245K from 106), Lithuania ($205K from 18), Finland ($190K from 110) and Israel ($185K from 37).
Verity was also the weekend’s top MPA title in the UAE, where it grossed $670K from 91 screens, and in India, where it took $500K from 350 screens. That was just 12% behind It Ends With Us — a remarkable result given the latter’s performance in the market. The U.S. genre has been gaining traction in India, with Obsession also showing strength there.
