Emma Watts brought the project to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with writer Tom King. Jon Goldwater, CEO and publisher of Archie Comics, will also produce. Aditya Sood, President of Lord Miller, will produce as well, marking the company’s first-look deal with Universal.
Archie Comics has sold over 3 billion comics worldwide, translated into multiple languages and read globally. With over 3 million social media followers and 20 million copies of the hit single “Sugar, Sugar” sold, the brand remains a pop culture staple. Archie is especially popular in regions like India—where 100 million comics have sold in the past 50 years—as well as the Philippines, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, and beyond.
Here is a statement from Lord and Miller about the project:
“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences—both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”
