The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the sequel to The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), it serves as the third and final installment of the film franchise. It is also the only entry not distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures; after a budget dispute, 20th Century Fox took over distribution. Disney later acquired the rights to all three films following its 2019 purchase of 21st Century Fox.
Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes, and Tilda Swinton return from the previous film, joined by newcomer Will Poulter. Set three Narnian years after the events of Prince Caspian, the story follows Edmund and Lucy Pevensie and their cousin Eustace Scrubb as they are drawn back into Narnia. There, they join King Caspian on a voyage to rescue seven lost lords and confront a sinister force emanating from a mysterious dark island. Each traveler undergoes personal trials as they journey toward Aslan’s country at the world’s end.
Development began in 2007 during production of Prince Caspian. Filming was initially planned for Malta, the Czech Republic, and Iceland in 2008, with Apted already attached to direct and a 2009 release targeted. Production stalled, however, after Disney exited due to budget disagreements with Walden Media, leading to 20th Century Fox stepping in under its Fox 2000 Pictures banner. Shooting ultimately took place in Australia and New Zealand in 2009. It remains the only film in the series released in 3D.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opened theatrically on December 9, 2010 in the UK and December 10 in the US. The film received mixed critical reviews but performed moderately well at the box office, earning over $415 million worldwide and becoming Fox’s highest-grossing film of 2010.
The song “There’s a Place for Us,” performed by Carrie Underwood, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. Although The Silver Chair was initially planned as the next installment, Walden Media’s contract with the C. S. Lewis estate expired in late 2011. The series is now set to be rebooted with Netflix’s planned adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
