Since its premiere on March 15th, the drama has become the UK’s biggest new series launch across all platforms and streamers since May 2025, based on 28-day figures. 4.1 million viewers—56% of the total audience—watched via BBC iPlayer.
The series—produced by Bad Wolf and written by Sarah Quintrell alongside Maddie Dai—reimagines the story of Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked middle sister from Pride and Prejudice. she leaves Longbourn for London, beginning a path of self-discovery while living with her aunt and uncle, and stepping out of her sisters’ shadow to forge her own identity. The series is based on Janice Hadlow's novel.
Here is a statement from Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, about the series success:
“We’re thrilled that The Other Bennet Sister has captured the nation’s imagination. Mary may have been overlooked by her own family, but she’s been warmly embraced by viewers—what a wonderful thing to see.”
Here is a statement from Jane Tranter, CEO of Bad Wolf, about the series success:
“It’s been a joy to introduce a new audience to the world of Jane Austen through the BBC. Janice Hadlow’s original story has been brought vividly to life by Sarah Quintrell, Jennifer Sheridan, Asim Abbasi, and our outstanding cast led by Ella Bruccoleri.
Mary may have started out as a wallflower, but she’s now rightfully at the center of attention. Our thanks go to the BBC for their support, and to the entire Bad Wolf team in Cardiff for their dedication and talent.”
