The film was nominated for two Academy Awards at the 74th Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score for John Williams. In 2016, a BBC poll of 177 critics ranked A.I. Artificial Intelligence as the 83rd greatest film released since 2000.
Genesis:
Development of A.I. Artificial Intelligence began in the late 1970s when Stanley Kubrick acquired the rights to Brian Aldiss's short story Supertoys Last All Summer Long. After working with Aldiss and later writers Bob Shaw, Ian Watson, and Sara Maitland, Kubrick envisioned the film as a futuristic retelling of Pinocchio. However, the project remained in development for years because Kubrick believed the visual effects technology of the time was not advanced enough to convincingly create David, the film's child android.
In 1985, Kubrick approached Steven Spielberg about directing the film while he served as producer, though the project did not move forward. Following the success of book-based film Jurassic Park in 1993, Kubrick revisited the idea, but remained dissatisfied with the available visual effects. In 1995, he handed the project to Spielberg while retaining his production company's involvement. After Kubrick's death in 1999, Spielberg completed the screenplay based largely on Watson's treatment and dedicated the finished film to Kubrick.
Box Office:
A.I. Artificial Intelligence opened at No. 1 in North America on June 29, 2001, earning $29.4 million during its opening weekend. It finished its domestic run with $78.6 million. Internationally, the film performed much stronger, including a record-breaking June opening in Japan, where it ultimately grossed $78 million. Worldwide, the film earned $235.9 million against a production budget of $90–100 million.
