Stephen King’s Desperation is heading to the big screen. Searchlight Pictures is developing a film adaptation of the 1996 published, horror novel.
Filmmaking duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are in talks to direct the project, while Sam Raimi is set to produce alongside his Ghost House Pictures partner Robert Tapert. The film marks the first collaboration between Raimi and King. Ryan Brennan is writing the screenplay.
Stein and Lipovsky will also produce the film, with Romel Adam and Jose Cañas serving as executive producers.
At Searchlight, SVP of Production Taylor Friedman and Creative Executive Cameron Chidsey are overseeing the project, reporting to Heads of Production and Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas. Mahdi Salehi of Hansen Jacobson negotiated the deal on behalf of Ghost House Pictures.

Nevada’s Route 50 is a lonely stretch of desert most people cross on their way somewhere else. But for a handful of travelers, the journey will end in the small mining town of Desperation—and none of them will make it to their intended destinations.
Among them are the Jacksons, a professor and his wife traveling home to New York; the Carvers, an Ohio family headed to Lake Tahoe for vacation; and Johnny Marinville, an aging literary celebrity riding a 700-pound Harley as he reinvents himself on the open road.
A gruesome roadside discovery signals their arrival in Desperation, a dying town overshadowed by the massive China Pit. But the landscape isn't the only thing that feels wrong. The town is ruled by Collie Entragian, an enormous, unhinged police officer who sees himself as the only law for miles around. A missing license plate or a flat tire is enough to put a traveler in his crosshairs.
Yet Entragian is only the beginning.
Something ancient and terrifying has infected Desperation, hiding beneath its barren landscape and twisted history. As the town's secrets emerge, young David Carver begins to realize that the evil consuming Desperation may not be the only supernatural force at work. Something else has answered the call—and it may be their only hope of survival.
