Kelly, who was also a dancer, choreographer and singer, had her breakthrough role of Helene in the film Sweet Charity.
She appeared in book-based film such as Soylent Green (book title is Make Room! Make Room!) The Andromeda Strain, Cool Breeze, The Spook Who Sat by the door, Lost in the Stars (book title is Cry the Beloved Country), and Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored.
The theater where Kelly worked at released a statement by the director Wren T. Brown:
“Her unassuming leadership was marked by compassion, elegance and grace. She was a rare and gifted artist, whom we will cherish forever.”
She is survived by her companion George Parkington, her niece Dina McCarthy, nephew Lehman Brockett and aunt Pearl Mackey.
