The best-selling YA novel, written by Angie Thomas, about police brutality was first a short story. During her senior year in Belhaven University, she wrote the short story in response to the death of Oscar Grant. Soon, she decided to expand the short story to a novel after the news report of multiple death of African-Americans by the police. The film adaptation stars Starr Carter and is played by Amandla Stenberg known for the first installment of The Hunger Games.
Wikipedia's Plot of The Hate You Give:
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
The screenplay is written by Audrey Wells (A Dog's Purpose, The Game Plan, and Shall We Dance?) and Tina Mabry(Queen Sugar). George Tillman Jr.(Soul Food, Barbershop, and The Longest Ride) directed the feature film.
